The Department of Botany at Raiganj Surendranath Mahavidyalaya was established in 1999 following the University of North Bengal’s affiliation grant to undergraduate general degree courses. The Honours Course was introduced in 2010 under the University of Gour Banga.
Programs offered are B.Sc. Major in Botany under NEP-2020. Dr. Rakhee Das Biswas, Associate Professor, is the Head of the Department of Botany. Other teaching faculty include Dr. Abdus Sabur (Assistant Professor), Md. Azmalul Alam (SACT), Riya Das (SACT), and Ria Chanda (SACT). It boasts of excellence in plant science education and has produced university toppers in undergraduate programs. The department has organized a Seminar/Symposium/Excursion. Eminent academicians are invited to deliver popular scientific talks very often. The departmental library has a significant number of books. Mr. Sailesh Mardi is the Laboratory Assistant. and takes care of the laboratory equipment. The departmental laboratory has instruments like a spectrophotometer, digital pH meter, laminar air flow, autoclave, incubator, digital and conventional microscopes, water bath, centrifuge, and many other small instruments for practical discourse.

To perceive and disseminate the importance of plants in sustaining the earth and to understand the diversity, development, and functioning to conserve and coexist with nature.
To bestow the students with a basic applied understanding of the subject through innovative teaching and learning, and to reach on the arrays and processes of life
Mission
To strengthen quality education and highlight the importance of plant science in the current context of food and environmental crisis.
To promote and foster academic excellence for enhanced critical thinking and developing new ideas.
To provide an academic environment for the benefit of students and faculty to elucidate ways for sustainable development.

Program Outcomes (POs)
Upon completion of the graduate program, the students will be able to:
PO-1: acquire the practical application of basic and conceptualized knowledge of plant sciences.
PO-2: develop the ability to perform efficiently the various laboratory and field techniques they can apply for scientific reasoning and problem-solving.
PO-3: develop better communication skills by means of seminar presentations that will help to develop confidence for self-education and ability to engage in life-long learning.
PO-4: pursue various academic and professional courses and will be ready for entry-level jobs in any area of biology.
PO-5: facilitate students to take-up successful career in Botany, actively participate and succeed in various competitive examinations.
