DEPARTMENT AT A GLANCE

The Department of Sociology at Raiganj Surendranath Mahavidyalaya has been an integral part of the college since its establishment in 1986. Initially, the department offered only a General Course in Sociology, serving a modest group of students eager to explore the subject. The department began its journey with just 25 students, most of whom came from various parts of Uttar Dinajpur, reflecting the local community’s growing interest in social sciences.

At its inception, the department was guided single-handedly by Shri Sankar Kumar Roy, the first and only faculty member at that time, whose dedication laid the foundation for the department’s development. Recognizing the increasing demand and the academic potential among students, the Honours Course in Sociology was introduced in 2001, marking a significant milestone in the department’s growth.

Over the years, the Department of Sociology has evolved steadily, continuing its commitment to academic excellence and contributing meaningfully to the broader mission of Raiganj Surendranath Mahavidyalaya.
