Hello everyone,
Warm greetings from all the faculty members of the Department of English!
We are proud to share that our department is supported by two full-time faculty members and two others in SACT capacity from the Government of West Bengal. Our specializations include British literature, American literature, Indian English literature, world literature, critical theory, cultural studies, gender studies, disability studies, and postcolonial studies. We aim to inspire students to explore emerging fields within the Humanities through our various supporting modules.
Our department has a Language Lab, a Film Club, virtual resources, and a rich collection of contemporary books. These resources ignite students’ interest in exploring English literature and using it as a tool to address social and political issues.
- Why Choose English Literature?
Studying English literature exposes you to diverse cultures, historical periods, and ways of thinking, broadening your understanding. It stimulates creativity and imagination, encouraging innovative thinking and problem-solving. The interdisciplinary nature of English literature connects it with fields like history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology, providing a well-rounded perspective. A degree in English literature opens doors to careers in teaching, writing, publishing, journalism, public relations, marketing, and more. Reading and discussing literature can be deeply fulfilling, offering self-reflection and exploration of human experiences. Literature addresses critical social and political issues, engaging you in important debates and highlighting the power of storytelling. It also cultivates a lifelong love for reading and continuous learning.
- To achieve our objectives, we host talks by visiting faculty, organize book talks with authors, and celebrate creativity through poetry addas. We advocate for an interdisciplinary approach to literature, encouraging students to delve into the essence of Sahitya and embrace all forms of diversity.
Vision:
We aim to cultivate a vibrant academic environment where literature becomes a lens for understanding human experiences, challenging social norms, and exploring diverse cultures. We envision empowering students to think critically, engage creatively, and contribute meaningfully to society through studying English literature and interdisciplinary inquiry.
Mission:
-
To offer comprehensive learning in English literature spanning British, American, Indian, and world literatures, with emphasis on critical theory, cultural studies, gender studies, disability studies, and postcolonial studies.
-
To foster analytical thinking, creativity, and empathy through interactive teaching, virtual resources, a language lab, a film club, and access to contemporary literary works.
-
To encourage interdisciplinary engagement by connecting literature with history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.
-
To promote inclusive and socially responsive education through book talks, guest lectures, and poetry addas that celebrate expression and diversity.
-
To prepare students for diverse professional paths and lifelong learning by nurturing a love for reading, critical dialogue, and cultural reflection.
We look forward to a vibrant and enriching academic journey with all of you!
Warm regards,
The Department of English Faculty Members
